This includes e.g. smart appliances like a sink or toilet adjusting automatically to a person’s height, an intelligent wardrobe suggesting outfits, an intelligent wheelchair and an intelligent walker, which are fitted with technical equipment to compensate declining physical and cognitive capabilities of elderly persons.
For research and development the BAALL, opened in 2009, is the ideal environment: here, researchers are developing mobile assistance and support systems for seniors in spe. They are testing them with regards to their everyday usability, and are continuously improving them.
In this guided tour we also like to provide insight into how we use the BAALL to provide hands-on learning experiences especially for schoolgirls.

Time: 11:00 a.m.
Location: Will be announced in the conference office.
Language: If participants who are English-speaking, but not German-speaking, are present, the guided tour will be in English.

Guided tour through Bremen’s Old town

The city tour through Bremen’s Old town offers city history and stories from the city in one. You will discover the market square – the parlor of Bremen – with its historic buildings (from the outside), the Cathedral yard, the Böttcherstrasse and finally reach the enchanting Schnoor quarter with its medieval flair.
Of course, you will also visit the Bremen Town Musicians, the city’s world-famous ambassadors who once made their way to the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen.

Why are the Bremen Town Hall and the Bremen Roland so important that they are both UNESCO World Heritage sites? What do art and decaffeinated coffee in Bremen have to do with each other? And why do the people of Bremen spit on a small black stone at the Cathedral yard? You will get the answers to these and many other exciting questions during the tour.

In between, you will also hear a few stories about famous women from Bremen and pass buildings in which famous women played and still play a role today. For example, the Paula Modersohn-Becker Museum in Böttcherstrasse is the first museum in the world dedicated to a female artist.
Look forward to exciting stories and secrets!

ZARM-Center of Applied Space Technology and Microgravity

Institute visite and guided tour, IF-IS INS 02

Monday, August 26, 2024
Time: 4:35 p.m.
Meeting point: Will be announced in the conference office.
Language: If participants who are English-speaking (but not German-speaking) are present, the language will be English.

The Bremen drop tower is a large-scale laboratory that is unique in Europe and offers scientists from all over the world the opportunity to conduct earthbound experiments under short-term weightlessness. In contrast to orbital microgravity research, it can be used permanently and cost-effectively. The 146m high concrete structure on the grounds of the University of Bremen has been in operation since September 1990 and is an important addition to the existing and planned laboratory units for orbital and suborbital microgravity research. Since then, around 400 experiment launches have been carried out continuously each year. The facility makes it possible to achieve a state of weightlessness up to three times a day for 4.74 seconds each time.

In December 2004, a catapult facility was put into operation, which was developed at the Center of Applied Space Technology and Microgravity (ZARM) and creates unique research conditions worldwide. This means that experiments can now be carried out under zero gravity conditions with a flight time of up to 9.3 seconds, with the flight path describing a “vertical” parabola.

Duration approx. 75 min. A visit to the top of the drop tower is not possible on this tour.

27 Aug (Tue) – Plenary discussion III

Plenary discussion III
Military technology and the defense industry

Plenary discussions, IF-IS DIS 03

Tuesday, August 27, 2024
Time: 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Location: Will be announced in the conference office.

Lisa Suckau, Leibniz-Institut für Friedens- und Konfliktforschung Frankfurt (PRIF)

Our third summer university discussion event will focus on the topics of dual use, defense technology and scientific-technical arms control.
First, Liska Suckau will introduce current issues and research with a keynote speech. We would then like to discuss with her and the participants and lecturers of the summer universities how technology development and the responsibility of technology developers are linked.

Keynote:
Military technology and the defense industry –
the nexus between technical research and development, social responsibility and arms control

Liska Suckau, researcher at the Cluster for Natural and Technical Science Arms Control Research at PRIF, specialises in understanding emerging disruptive technology (EDT). With a background in mechanical engineering from TU Dresden, she expanded her expertise by studying political science and war and peace studies in the Netherlands. Initially motivated by first-hand experience of arms in a conflict zone, her studies focused on arms use, force, and trade. Now at PRIF she explores the technical limitations of EDTs, their use in warfare,  need for control, and their potential for verifying future arms control agreements. OHB Company Tour II

Long field trip, IF-IS GEX 05

Tuesday, August 27, 2024
Time: 1:30 p.m.
Meeting point: Will be announced in the conference office.
Language: The guided tour will be in English.
Participation is only possible if the participant has submitted a complete registration by 15.08.2024, stating her date of birth, nationality or country of origin and ID numbers. On the day of the event, it is necessary to carry a valid identity document!

OHB SE is a European space and technology group and one of the major independent forces in its industry with an excellent market position. It combines 20 fully consolidated subsidiaries under one roof whose core activities cover the entire value chain in the space industry: From the development and implementation of turn-key space systems for all applications, to component manufacturing for various launcher programs and service activities such as satellite operations and the processing and provision of the collected data. Further growth will be driven by the growing demand for space-based applications, technology transfer into new industries and the expansion of service activities. In the course of its more than 40-year history, OHB has been able to steadily build up capabilities and increase revenues to over EUR 1 billion. The Group currently employs over 3,000 people at 15 locations in 10 countries and has thus evolved from a former “garage company” into one of the three major European satellite system suppliers.
On the day of the excursion, our experts will be happy to provide insights into their specialist areas and will be available for a subsequent exchange and in-depth discussion of individual topics.

28 Aug (Wed) – Block-type thermal power station

Visit and guided tour: The Bremen-swb block-type thermal power station

Small field trip, IF-IS KEX 02

Wednesday, August 28, 2024

Participants with pacemakers are obliged to make this known before the tour.

One of Germany’s most modern gas-fired power plants has been located in Bremen since 2023. swb has completed a highly efficient combined heat and power plant (CHP) at the site in Bremen-Hastedt.

Climate-neutral by 2035 remains the clear goal. The new combined heat and power plant replaces a coal-fired unit, significantly reducing CO2-emissions. It is also intended to ensure security of supply in the long term. As long as renewable energies are not yet available in sufficient form, generating energy from gas is an important technology for swb.

The power plant will be technically capable of using biomethane or hydrogen in addition to regular natural gas.
